Tony: Adventureland DVD review

Last week we began to do DVD reviews because our blog is so young. This week, we bring you Adventureland which was released on DVD yesterday. The movie is directed by Greg Mottola who also directed Superbad. The movie stars Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame.

The movie is about a young man named James Brennan (Eisenberg) who is in desperate need of a summer job. He gets a job at Adventureland, a theme park, and meets Em (Stewart). The movie is about overcoming insecurities and accepting who you really are... this is where the movie does very well. The emotion the actors bring to the table is really great. You see this developing relationship between James and Em, and it's believable. The acting is top notch. Even the supporting cast is great, they all add something to the movie that is needed for the story.

Where I feel that the movie fell a little flat was in the pacing and editing. There were maybe 5 or 6 scene I would have cut out of the movie all together. There were a few scenes that were identical, and didn't really move the story forward. My thought is, the director left them in to establish the character's self-esteem issues.

Another thing about this movie that needs to be established is that it is NOT a comedy. It definitely has funny parts and the dialogue is very sophisticated. But again, to categorize this movie as a comedy is in correct. It's a romantic-comedy at best, but a dramedy is a better description.

Overall the movie is worth renting. I would say save your money because this is a movie you're not going to watch twice. The cast is great, the story is decent, but the directing was lacking. But still watch it, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
