OK, we know we're a little late for a G.I. Joe review, but here it goes. You ready for the shocker of the day... here it is: G.I. Joe is the MUST SEE movie of the summer! Yep, I'm not lying and I'm not over exaggerating. Here at AtD, we don't like to 'criticize' movies before we see them, we just simply present the news UNTIL we see the movie. We reported that the movie's special effects were in question by the studio, rumors that the director was fired and that the studio elected not to screen the film to critics. But we've seen it and here goes our review. Remember, less about plot and more about opinion.
Here are a few things that I liked:
The Action. The movie is non stop action. There are great action sequences that I really don't remember seeing anywhere else. We've seen action in busy streets, but not like this! There is a chase scene with two of the 'Joes' chasing a Hummer on foot... in their accelerator suits! Watching computer generated Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans chase a Hummer on foot is in-cred-able. There is action on land, in the air and by sea. You will get lost in the action. And the pacing keeps you so interested, so involved, it doesn't feel like a two hour movie.
The Special Effcts. Whoever put together the trailer for this movie should be fired. The movie looks so much better than the trailer. The CGI was sharp, crisp and really did blend well with the surroundings of France. There were a few parts where I knew it was not shot on site, but CGI. It's not obvious unless you know what to look for, and to be honest, very few people care.
The Actors. The right people for the job, period. Channing Tatum was perfect as the All-American military boy. Wayans was the comic relief you would expect him to be. Sienna Miller is a beautiful and sexy villain, and Rachel Nichols is drop dead gorgeous as a 'Joe'. Dennis Quaid plays the perfect leader of the 'Joes', even though he's not in the movie much.
What I didn't really like:
The Dialogue. Just as cheezy as you'd expect out of the 1960's Batman TV show. Which is too bad, it really wasn't necessary. I guess I understand they were trying to appeal to children as well as adults, but it really wasn't necessary. It actually took away from the film.
The Plot. It felt like it was forced, and I hate when movies do that. I've seen a movie like this. Does anyone remember the DMX starring Cradle 2 the Grave with Jet Li? Yep... same story. New weapon is developed, and the highest bidder will control the world! Yada yada... it's a summer movie, it doesn't have to be The Dark Knight.
That's about all I didn't like. The movie is very entertaining. And that's the point of going to the movies. It wont win any Oscars, but it's good. Another thing, we haven't had much to be too crazy about this summer, in terms of action pics. Remember Wolverine? Or how about Revenge of the Suck? Yeah, that's what I thought. Go see this movie! It's that good... I'm ready for the hate mail... bring it on!
